Creative Spotlight: Colen Colthurst of Porch Modern
Continuing our Creative Spotlight series, where we highlight Toronto-based creatives in our community, meet Colen Colthurst—a lifelong collector, mid-century modern design enthusiast, and the founder of Porch Modern. His collection feels more like a personal archive than a showroom. Every piece has a story, and every object has been chosen with care.
Colen doesn't collect with resale in mind, he collects items because he's drawn to the materials, the textures and the history. Porch Modern's name stems from Colen's early years, when he was finding pieces around the city, often on porches. He'd come across old Charles Eames furniture and other forgotten gems. What started as a playful name has stuck over the years.
Like his collection, Colen's approach to life is all about intention. He's built a business around doing what he loves and values the freedom that comes with it. As he puts it, "Time is worth more than money."
Colen styled himself in various pieces from our latest delivery, including the Indigo Herringbone Washed Shirt, Indigo Quilted Chore Coat and the Olive Quilted Shirt. His personal style is casual and thoughtful. He looks for garments that are built to last, made from natural materials and are rooted in timeless silhouettes. Colen's perspective on design and clothing reminds us that the best things are made with purpose and meant to stand the test of time.
