Creative Spotlight: John from Mellah
At Outclass, we’re thrilled to kick off our Creative Spotlight series by Introducing you to John, the co-founder of Mellah, a Moroccan rug store nestled in the heart of Roncesvalles Village.
A Happy Accident:
For John and his wife Miriam, Mellah was born out of a serendipitous journey. After a decade in New York City, they made the decision to return to Toronto with their newborn daughter. But before settling back, they embarked on a backpacking adventure that led them to Morocco. There, amidst the vibrant colours and intricate designs of Moroccan rugs and textiles, they found their calling. What started as a chance encounter blossomed into a thriving brick-and-mortar business.
Embracing Entrepreneurship:
As an entrepreneur, John relishes the freedom to shape his own destiny. From setting his own schedule to defining his workload, entrepreneurship has granted him the autonomy to pursue his passion while prioritizing what matters most to him: family, lifestyle and community.

John’s connection to Toronto is rooted in its rich tapestry of cultures and flavors. He admires the city’s dynamic food scene, a reflection of its multicultural identity. Beyond the culinary experiences, John is drawn to Toronto’s cosmopolitan vibe and free-spirit energy, making it the perfect backdrop for his business ventures.
Defining Personal Style:
John's style is all about simplicity and quality, favouring well-fitting, high-quality bottoms, shirts and knits that effortlessly blend together. His wardrobe is a mix of new purchases, thrifted gems and unique samples acquired through his wife's career in menswear, reflecting his appreciation for individuality and authenticity.
